newbie confused!

I just got a new receiver sonicview elite still in the box.
what is a key, and a bin? Do I need both?
I know a bin is a binary number I still remenber that from the old direct tv Mikoubo days, but as far as this new box goes I'm lost.
what is step number one for getting this box up and running with DN.
The dish is installed.
I saw the channel list for real FTA channels and they are not too exciting.
Religous channels and college stations. I just want DN.
There is a lot of info on this site but is useless to someone who doesn't understand it.
